Into The Wild: Blog Post #3

By Jack Schwinkendorf

"At least I was going to die in this beautiful place" (Krakauer 15)

Topic: inspiration

When I first started reading this book, I saw Chis as nothing but another idiot with some overrated story about how his trip was somehow "inspirational". Well i still think its an overrated story, but i take inspiration from his desire and motivation shown all through out his journey. Chris knew when he graduated from his university, that he was going on an adventure. Although he ended up dying from being unprepared and unsure of the wilderness, he still made it over huge obstacles. Also from what we know in his journal, he died happy in a place he loved. For the past few years in my life I struggled with sever depression and anxiety. I've had the hardest time finding in the deepest of my troubles, any reason even to get out of bed. But since reading this, I found a little bit more motivation to do things in my life a little more, working to complete school work and just to find the best in every day.

Into The Wild: blog post #2

TITLE:

" I didn't know what I was going to say. How do you tell someone that their child is dead?" (Krakauer 102).

Topic: Family dynamics

Once Chris's body was discovered in his sleeping bag 2 months after he died, the Alaska state troopers were on a hunt to figure out the identity of the body. After reviewing his journal they assumed he was botanist who was out examining plants and nature. That was the original thought, soon after they tried to find his ID or a wallet. However Chris left these back in Arizona in a hole next to his car he abandon on his journey. After more work by the police, they were able to track down his half brother who lived near where Chris used to live. After all of the fake leads called in, Chris's brother was able to provide his social security number to the police. The hardest part for Sam was having to drive to his parents house and tell them what happened to Chris. Family dynamics played a big part in the interaction between Sam and his parents. Although Chris had left and broke all ties with his family a few years before, Sam still took the burden and went to inform the parents

Advice for the Great Beyond

By Jack Schwinkendorf

When going out into the wilderness, always make sure at least one person knows where you are going or the general area you will be in. That way if you do not turn up at a certain time, they can alert the authorities. The first mistake Chris made was just wandering off by himself into an uninhabited area. The second and possibly more dangerous mistake was being very unprepared. Survival experts say that a large hiking backpack is only able to carry enough essential needs for only 5 days out in the wilderness. Chris only had a small school backpack with raw rice and hardly any water. Having a necessary amount of water to survive is essential. Sadly no evidence of a water distiller  was found at the bus sight that Chris died at.
